Dr. Schatzel is dean of the College of Business. She has extensive experience working as a researcher, consultant, and teacher in the areas of new product success, marketing of high technology products, and reputation management. Additionally, she is the founder of iLabs, the College of Business’s Center for Innovation Research
iLabs, a research center established in 2006, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of corporate, entrepreneurial, and institutional innovation. Since its inception, iLabs has conducted significant sponsored research for some of Michigan’s leading businesses and governmental organizations including a major study for Ford Motor Company on employee buy-outs, economic impact studies for The Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run Airports, and the development of the Entrepreneurial Cities Index, an annual study that examines the best practices of communities that foster entrepreneurial and economic growth. The most recent iLabs project - the Innovation Index - was introduced in early February 2008 in partnership with Crain’s Detroit Business. The Innovation Index, released quarterly, provides a leading indicator of Michigan’s economic health as it measures innovation activity in areas such as trademark trends, venture capital, SBA loans, and new incorporations.
Kim’s business experience includes over 20 years of corporate and new venture experience including tenure as the founder and CEO of a multinational automotive components firm and three start-up technology-based businesses.
She has taught at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive level, in the United States and internationally, on topics such as the Marketing of Technology-Based Products, Obtaining Venture Capital Funding, Innovation and New Product Development, and Reputation Management. In 2006, the University of Michigan-Dearborn recognized her with the University’s Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award.
Her research focuses on how corporate reputation and top-management-team marketing activities impact firm performance and new product success. She has been published in venues such as the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.
