Entrepreneurs fill campuses with start-up dreams

Tap a Michigan college student and find a budding entrepreneur.

Bypassing the corporate ladder, more than four in every 10 Michigan college students say they hope to start their own businesses one day, according to The Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll of 640 students at the state's three biggest universities.

Getting rich isn't the only, or even the primary, reason. Flexibility and control seem to be more important.

Kim Schatzel, acting dean of business at the University Michigan-Dearborn and an expert on entrepreneurs, said the poll results reinforce other studies.

"One of the factors that motivates people to be entrepreneurs is this issue of control. They want to be in charge of their own lifestyle," she said.
